What is a storybook walk?

Children’s books are usually set up in about 12-14 spreads. A spread is the name of both the left and the right page put together. On a storybook walk, these spreads have been laminated and put onto display stands either within the school or a park so that children can read the story as they walk. Over time, many creative librarians started adding new things to these walks including literacy tips, movement prompts, and activities. In this way, children can be an active participant in the book.

The first storybook walks were done in the medieval times. These were colorful stained glass images on cathedral windows which depicted the passion of Christ. In 2007, Anne Fergueson who had been doing storybook walks in her state trademarked the name Storywalk® and began to spread the idea of using children’s books along display stands in parks. Now you can find storybook walks everywhere from the United States to Australia. In some places a storybook walk is called a Story Stroll.
